This month’s Media Bites is kind of lacking since we’ve spent most of our time house hunting for our upcoming move to Austin, but here’s a quick review of some of the movies, television shows, music, and other media that I’ve consumed and thought was worth sharing for the month of June 2018.
Movies
Tag – This movie was much better than I expected it to be. It was fun, funny, and had some serious moments towards the end. The best part was video from the real friends playing tag. Yes, it’s based on a true story.
TV
Succession – Another great new HBO show. This show tells the story of a family owned corporation and the founder (Brian Cox) who is about to retire, but decides at the last minute against it, and all of the fallback and conspiring his children do to gain his favor, and more power.
Parks and Recreation – We’ve been looking for some comfort and uplifting things to watch, so we decided to rewatch one of our favorite shows. It still holds up, and keeps us rolling.
Music
- For the Lonely Ones by Lucero (Apple Music / Spotify)
- Numb by Meg Myers (Apple Music / Spotify)
- Insistor by Tapes ‘n Tapes (Apple Music / Spotify)
Not specific song, but a playlist (of sorts) discovery. While in Austin this weekend we decided to have dinner at one of our favorite new places, Holy Roller. The owners describe the restaurant as being “inspired by the spirit of punk rock with a hint of religious kitsch” and server southern/comfort food. The description is my kind of place.
The music they play is also great – it’s a mix of punk and lo-fi garage rock. I asked our waitress if it was a playlist or their personal library, and she told me to search for The Detroit Cobras on Apple Music or Spotify, and start a radio station based on them. She was not wrong. I spent the rest of the weekend and into this week listening to it.
