Media Bites – October 2019

October 31, 2019 Mike Rastiello

Here’s the wrap up for all of the movies, TV, music and other media I consumed in October that I thought was worth sharing.

Movies

Jojo Rabbit – Wow. This movie is so awesome, it may end up being my favorite movie of the year. This movie is equal parts funny, touching, sad, and inspiring. I can’t say enough about it, and you immediately need to see it.

TV

Mr. Robot (S4) – The final season is airing now through Christmas. I’m still invested in this show, but I am finding it harder to follow. A rewatch of the whole series after it is over may be necessary.

Downton Abbey (S1-3) – A lot of friends have told us to watch this show over the years, and we finally dove in and we’re really enjoying it. I think the most interesting thing about this show to me is the class system, especially within the house staff.

Music

  • Gypsy by Tigers Jaw (Apple Music / Spotify)
  • Social Drinker by Swordfish (Apple Music / Spotify)
  • Bleeding White by The Avett Brothers (Apple Music / Spotify)
  • Can’t Hardly Wait (Acoustic Version) by The Ataris (Apple Music / Spotify)
  • 14 Days by Floral Tattoo (Apple Music / Spotify)
  • Blasphemy by Hippie Trim (Apple Music / Spotify)
  • Move Together by Desert Sessions (Apple Music / Spotify)

Podcasts

Conan Needs a Friend – David Letterman – I have really enjoyed this podcast, even when Conan interviews people that I’m not a major fan of (the Howard Stern episode sticks out in my mind here). This interview between Conan and David Letterman was so great to listen to. These two have been on each other’s shows over the years, but this raw and stripped down informal interview was such a great listen.

Apps/Games

I signed up for Apple Arcade last month and so far I am really liking it. I wish there were more puzzle type games instead of first-person type games, but hopefully, more will be built and added as time goes on. It is very cool to play games that you don’t need to pay to win or be hit with dozens of ads during gameplay. Here are some of my favorite games so far.

Grindstone – A game similar to Bedazzled or Candy Crush, but instead of mindlessly moving like shapes together and paying to beat every other level you have to create chains to characters to slice through to beat bosses and escape caves with gems and treasures you find. Yeah, it’s a little gruesome, but still fun. Probably my favorite game of the bunch.

Mini Motorways – From the developers of one of my favorite games (Mini Metro) this game follows a similar premise. You need to get people from a location to their home based on the color of the buildings.

Assemble with Care – This game really speaks to me, and I wish there were dozens of more levels. Your character is on a trip and to make sure she can afford travel, lodging, and food she fixes things around each village she visits. Okay, so the story is a little odd, but the character takes things apart and puts them back together with working parts which I have always loved doing.

Down in Bermuda – In this game, you walk around on a series of islands solving puzzles to get gems and keys to move you forward so you can escape on your plane that crashed on the islands.

Possessions – This game was fun, but kind of frustrating at times. You basically have to swipe around a room to line up pieces of various items up to make a whole item. The frustrating part is you have to do it in a specific order that isn’t always obvious. It was fun and mindless, so I’m including it here.
